Dystopia Regained

I was brought up in the 70s and ran through teen life in the 80s with many great movies and ideas. And what clicked most deep in me was about dystopian future. Growing up with Orwellian ideas left and right, dystopia forms large part of my imagination until now.

I love all of them dystopia fiction, even though some of the ideas are laughable at that time, especially about corporate media taking over human lives which was perfectly portrayed in Videodrome. It was a bit too radical to be true in the future. Or so I thought that time.

Flash forward to NOW. I’m seeing before my eyes the grotesque power of the media. Enslaving almost everyone, doing it’s master’s bidding without them knowing it. Media has warped the minds up to a level where a mere video on youtube has become the de facto source for Truth. *MTV has change the youth so drastically that speeches and body languages (along with musical taste) were changed hideously.
* MTV - a general title I use to describe a collective of entertainment-oriented culture altering media.

If I were to highlight these arguments with youth of today, I’d be laughed at. Just like me in my teen years, I’d laugh at the idea of Videodrome and it’s media-controlling plot – simply because the director and storyteller told it in quite a fantastical ways, much like watching Star Wars. But I realised Media is a much more powerful beast. Full of cunning and guile. Deceiving with the face of Truth. Until we’d feel stupid not to believe in the Media.

Now, Video really has killed the Radio star. And we have become the Sheeple.

Me and my GPS we got issues

Today I got the opportunity to make full use of my GPS system. Need to go to Kelana Business Centre. I’ve only been there once and that was quite a long time ago so I’m kinda fuzzy on how to get there.

‘Drive 100 meter and turn left’
Nifty tool for a road-blind fool. That’s me.

Everything seem fine until there was a smaller, confusing split-roads.
‘Turn left. Turn left …… Turn left’

‘Recalculating…’

After a few of these ‘Recalculating…’ episodes, I swear I can hear a bit of accusation in the GPS’s voice! Like I’ve put it into extra work with my incompetency. And when the next alternative road was calculated ‘Drive 1 kilometer and stay left’ I swear I heard the word ‘kilometer’ as ‘oh come on!’.

Oh I’ve tried to please her then. So when the next accusing ‘Recalculating…’ got issued I was halfway through saying ‘Ohh sorry Luna!’.

BTW I called her Luna.

Luna eventually got me to the destination and back safely. I’m just not sure whether she’d consider uninstalling herself off my phone o_O

Top 5 reasons to watch Avatar, again.

Just came back from watching Avatar. I don’t have high expectation from it. But man I was blown away by it. Here’s my Top 5 reasons to watch Avatar, again:

- It’s a James Cameron movie. A big big budget one. The biggest to date I think.

- Big bipedal mecha. With a jagged bayonet on a big canon gun. Warhammer 40K-esque. Versus blue-skinned tribal alien which is bigger than the human but primitive.

- Fantastic world of glowing forests, floating mountains, and symbiotic lifeforms. A place I wouldn’t mind living in or dying for.

- The women in this movie: Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, and most importantly Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) which almost single-handedly would pull you into Pandora and it’s people the Na’vi.

- And finally, seeing boobs & cute butts on the big screen without feeling perverse or in any way shameful. Definitely not a cheap flesh trick. It was elegantly sexy,natural, and honest in many ways. The Na’vi women I mean.

PS: I’m booking for a second viewing this weekend. I don’t usually watch the same movie twice in the same week. This is one very GOOD movie though. Avatar made it up for atleast 5 years of dull sci-fi/fantasy movie from Hollywood. I’m satisfied *bliss*.

Beauty Charm

Last few weekends I went to Lotus Ampang for a meet-up about work. As usual the place’s full of kodok-watching potentials. Then came striding in an actor and his friend/GF/fellow female artist. I don’t know their names but I know they’re quite popular in TV drama. Even my japanese friend Shinobu knows about this actor. She’s a bit weird though for liking Malay drama so much. Anyways…

What strike me most is that this two celebrities are way better looking in real-life than on TV. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? As usually the case with Hollywood stars that look really awesome on screen, but fugly in real-life? This is not a one-off observation. Most ‘celebrity’ that I’ve met outside the tube are wayyy better-looking/prettier. It puzzled me, really.

I came to a conclusion that either our TV production are generally bad, bad make-up artist, or perhaps both. Or maybe, just MAYBE they all wears susuk. And maybe the *susuk’s charm got nullified going through the tube…?

Talking about susuk, now that is one powerful thing. Imagine if one of the make-up company made it commercial: Summer Susuk Foundation by M.A.C. Disclaimer: Side effects of spiritual disturbance or hauntings are known to affects the user. M.A.C hold no accountability if such things occurred. Please consult a *Bomoh or equivalent witch-doctor.

Let’s not limit our imagination to just make-ups. Imagine Triumph, Audrey, and other in-supermarket under-garment brand could do with. Say, Wonder-Bra or Wonder-Panties - Susuk Enhanced. Instant Scarlett Johansson or Beyonce (respectively). Or even Jessica Biel (overall yummilious 4 thumbs up). That is, if you buy a complete set of Susuk Enhanced products. Discounted ofcourse. It’s women’s stuff after all. 5% OFF. Serious bargain, right girls?

A New Hope

A new hope. A cure. It could be anything. A new job. New circle of friends. A replacement of your wrecked car. Quitting smoking. Newfound passion or hobby. Meeting someone special or falling in love again. It could be anything really.

It is a chance. A vaccine. A new lease of life that brings us out of our mired situations. Into something more meaningful to look forward to every day we wakes up. It doesn’t have to be for the better, just for something different. To get out of current stagnation that slowly kills us inside.

New hope can be big or small but nonetheless important. Getting a new hobby could be life-saving to some but a laughable pastime to others. It also involves risks too. Risk of expectation. Of things new and shiny. Risk of wasting time with. But all those risks are better than stagnation isn’t it?

A new hope. For a start, let’s just hope for a new hope. If you can find it, grab it. Things like these only come once in a while. Try not to let go. But ofcourse, we can only hope it came by and wanted to stay. When it doesn’t, when it slipped away from our hands, we’ll feel much worst than before. Feeling jaded. Rejected. Forlorn. Scattered and divided.

Let’s just hope we have energy left for another try. Or you’re really in a deeper shit than before. HA HA.

Of Hindi movies & Food

Recently I’ve been exposed with too many Hindi movies and TV series. It’s my mom’s doing – I gotta explain the story to her :|

Anyways, I’ve learn a few things while in that tortured position:
1. Malay & Hindi language share similar words like almari (Closet. yup it’s their word), mungkin (maybe), musibah (catastrophe), to name a few beside the well-known syabas (congrats), maut (death) …and hospital (err…).

2. To signify sunrise, they use loud sound fx of morning birds. Many many birds. Very very loud. Wondered if they woke up and yell “Yeaaayy happyyy” (sic: about firecrackers and Deepavali)

3. In Hindustani drama Food is a very important aspect to in-laws (whole bunch of them). Preparation, cooking, serving, how it taste like, etc took 3 episodes in which the new daughter-in-law showed blissful happiness when everything went well. Almost orgasmic. Really.

Talk about food, recently I had a conversation using food as analogy to relationship. About either you’re the type of person who likes drive-through or a complete meal from appetizer to dessert. I believed in the latter but what’s more important to me is not how you do it, but who you do it with and the occasion, small or big. You could still feel lonely having 12-course ballroom dinner surrounded by hundreds of people. In the other hand, a drive-through could be a great experience if you’re with somebody special.

Atleast IMO, that is better than to eat alone isn’t it?

• don’t go to shopping mall on 2nd day Raya and expect like it’s like normal day.

• fantasy & dreams are just that: fantasy & dreams – can go ‘poof’ any moment.

• some things are best kept to oneself. Even to the closest person.

• honest expressive opinion are sometimes misinterpreted. Badly.

• no matter how extraordinary some people may be, they are still ordinary, somehow.

• pessimism is a useful, powerful tool that I’ve forgotten to ‘misuse’.

• ghosts of past lives die hard. it can still haunts us even if we think it was buried deep.

• in three years time (two plus to be exact) the number 40 is going to be a very scary number.

So, in a nutshell I learned this: don’t expect too much of anything in life.

Be a Man!

9.00 pm, middle of Ramadhan, somewhere in Kuala Lumpur city centre.

A malay guy with a bottle of beer came wandering around with a bit of a drunkard gait. He has this smug, who-dares-me look on his mixed parental face - a typical KL city boy, well-built with attitude thinking his liberal philosophies are well above the average Joe on the street of Kuala Lumpur.

Smug and challenging. Outspoken and modern. Liberal.

On recognizing a familiar face, he came near my table, resting his hand on the back of the chair opposite me. Languidly he spoken “Hey man, been a long time. Can I share your table mate?” And that smug smile still on his face.

“Sorry, nope.” A bit miffed, I continue reading my book.

“Oh come on! Wait, you don’t want to be associated with a beer-drinking guy in Ramadhan eh?” A bit more of that smugness with a laugh.

Looking up from my book, “Not really, I just don’t like potential drunkards. And please respect others.” looking at the beer bottle and a forced smile to hide my annoyance.

“Oh you’re so righteous aren’t you?” now leaning closer to me, expelling beer-breath onto my face.

He continued “Look, I’m a man that stand for my rights and only answers to myself because I’m a Free, Liberal man. I don’t restrain myself because some hardcore fundamentalist put down laws. Also I’m not going to let myself be like one of the cows tucked at the nose to follow without questioning, without thinking.”

A bit more excited on having a chance to deliver his thoughts he continued “Stand for your rights! Be a MAN! Are you content being just a cow?”

I put down the book and look up his stinky face “First of all, I’m not your friend. Secondly, I don’t give a fuck about your liberal P.O.V. And third, I’m capable of standing for my rights, or the rights of people close to me.”

More than a little pissed I continued “Right now I’m defending my rights to be alone and usually I don’t just stand and babble out bad breath. I usually use my fists for defending my rights. Are you up to that?”

The potential punching bag started to open his mouth in retaliation but I don’t give him a chance “You talk big about being liberal and standing for your rights. Can you even defend it if I were to test you with a few punches and kicks?” and pushed my chair a bit out of the table as if ready to get up and prove to him there and then. “It has been a while since I last bash people up” flexing my fists and neck.

Backing a step away, as if being slapped, he was very alert now with a little trembling.

“Yeah, I guess not. Shoo boy, and learn some self-defence first before you go out strutting your Liberal Man attitude and REALLY stand for your rights. You just proved you’re not THAT free.” And I further aggravated him with a mimic of his own words “Be a MAN!! Poser” and laugh it off.

Visibly reddened from my challenge and taunt he stormed off while uttering a loud “Fuck you!”

Yeah sure, go home and cry liberal boy. I had a good laugh by the way.

What’s the difference between… (Malaysian & Indonesian movie)

What’s the differences between Malaysian and Indonesian movie?
1) In Malaysian movie, emotion portrayal are definitely acted on.

2) Malaysian comedy movie requires the actor/actresses to laugh out loud so that viewers know there are jokes involved.

3) In Malaysian movie, “Movie of the year” means it was made this year. That’s it.

4) Indonesian movie have funny names for their characters but quite serious about it. Malaysian movie just have ‘funny’ characters. In a serious movie.

5) Indonesian Romance movie means all the finer points about Love. In Malaysian movie it means Yusof Haslam.

What’s the difference between… (Hindi & Tamil movie)

Another 5 points of my views on: Hindi & Tamil movie this time.

What’s the differences between Hindi and Tamil movie?
1) Hindi movie comes with pretty hero & heroine. Tamil movie only delivers pretty heroine. Sometime. Ok ok, once a decade apart.

2) In Hindi movie, LOVE conquers all. In Tamil, BLOODSHED is.

3) The blood is redder in Tamil movie. Yes, serious. And a lot more copious too.

4) In Hindi movie, Michelin Man means a Michelin Man. In Tamil movie, Michelin Man means the hero. Or the heroine too.

5) In Tamil movie, hero expresses anger with a powerful fist. Same with Hindi movie, but prefaced with flowery words or idioms. Eg: “The tears of your mother will stop flowing for I’m here to end your miserable, sinful life, thus relieving your mother of the knowledge of giving birth to such a monster!!” *dushhhhhhhemm*

What’s the difference between… (Hollywood & Independent movie)

My five points stereotypical take on differences between movie industry.

What’s the differences between Hollywood and Independent movie?
1) In Hollywood movie, the actors/actresses still look good even though they’re about to be devoured by fugly monster.

2) In Hollywood movie, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, etc can be under one category – Action.

3) Hollywood movie could cost a space-shuttle and still couldn’t flex the brain muscle.

4) Hollywood movie’s ‘based on true event’ are as truthful as my neighbour’s fart – heard it, but no smell involved.

5) Inde movie can be overbearing on showing gratuitous tits (which is fine) BUT general nekidness!? just so to show it’s an Indie movie. WE GET IT! You’re independent, rebellious. OK. We don’t wanna see an old man’s hairy balls. THANK YOU.

What is wrong with me?!?! Damn I can’t sleep. I sms’ed a friend asking is she asleep. Yeah stupid thing to ask when you know that person might be pissed getting early morning, unimportant, pointless, sms.

Well, i am sleep-deprived. So pardon my stupidity. On the other hand, it might be fun if I can witness the whole pissy scene. Hehe ok now I feel better.

English or BM

Why do I write in English instead of my native Bahasa Malaysia?

Recently I read a few blogs in BM. Some are really good. Expressive, cool and not sounding ‘weird’. Since BM is my native language which I use everyday, so why don’t I write in BM?

Simple answer: My BM is really bad.
A slightly better answer is that I’m not very good at expressing myself in BM. It felt awkward. Cluttered with borrowed words – an inadequacy of my own knowledge instead of the language itself.

So I write in English. Not to say I write good English. Hell NO! I don’t even speak good English. But my thoughts flows easier in English. Like when in the middle of a fight with my companion, it’s always in English. Haha.

But I want to try, hopefully without sounding too funny, to write in BM. Well, anytime is a good time to start:

Past few nights I heard a wailing ambulance pass-by. Unexpectedly I felt a twinge of emotion somewhere in my chest. No its not a twinge for myself.

This morning, an old lady in wheelchair was ushered through my gate. An old friend of Mak. She’s so old and frail…obsolete. I felt that twinge again. And pity too. But Mak’s friend mustered little frail energy she has to visit her friend. Probably something worthwhile to do while they’re alive.

Something I’ve taken for granted.

Then came realization of Time. Something that I might lose. No, I WILL lose, someday. This mood suits the song playing right now.

Being a nocturnal creature

As a hardcore Nocturnalist I usually stay awake until what most people consider “start of the day”. Here’s a look into what a nocturnal creature’s ‘day’ is like. The Love & Hate.

The LOVE

12am-1am – perfection of balance between the waking & sleeping world
2am-3am – the cooling of the Earth.
4am – A very Silent, Cool, Peaceful, Blissful time

and then the HATE

5am – mosquitos, mostly aedes start to hunt for food and my blood is mosquito-friendly.
6am – The sky start to bleed some blue and signalling a rise in activity like…
7am – busses, cars, motorbike starts rushing by my house. And I mean RUSHING. Dude, no matter how fast you rush, you’d still be in the jam. Chill please!
8am – I know i’m really fucked up if i don’t sleep now.

I just don’t believe the society we live in today can achieve it easily.

Because the world & society today is full of bullshits and without which they can’t survive. Yes, on BULLSHITS. Just stop for a while and look around in the general social direction:
• Expectation.
• Credibility.
• Popularity.
• Vanity (yes male too!)
• Economics
and the list grows more and more over the time.
Oh I forgot to attach prefix 'HIGH' to each list - HIGH Expectation, etc.

Come on. Think about it. You were born RAW. All of the above are just built-upon layers. Enforced by the society you lived in. By your peers based on perceived ideals and ultimately by the old devil himself: Mr.Capitalism.

Not by your conscious decision ultimately.

So, going back to this blog’s topic - Unconditional Acceptance - which really means ‘none of above layers required’. Can you accept or like or love someone with just their RAW self? And please try not to kid yourself by answering an optimistic YES before really re-thinking your brain out.

Stupid Cat

Yesterday while readying to go out I heard a mewing kitten non-stop in front of my house. It sounded hungry, lost, and afraid. So I began to search for the location of the poor thing. Nearing it, I saw a small grey kitten bolted out of it’s hiding place. It ran blindly across the road while cars passing by nearly hits it. Without stopping, it then made a u-turn and crossed back to it’s hiding place, missing another car hit. My blood froze! What a stupid, stupid cat! phewww LUCKY cat!

OK this episode made me feel bad of wanting to help the stupid cat. My action could get the cute thing flattened or splattered on the road. Feel like wringing the blasted thing’s neck! OK that won’t help a bit.

Anyway it’s just primal instinct. Can’t blame them little things. In fear or entrapment, the kitten tried it’s best to survive. Which made me realize that human do these things too. Especially those in a misconception of a relationship lol. They lie, cover tracks, made up excuses (some are really stupid excuses). By doing so, they basically betray the relationship without really understanding the outcome of their misguided deeds.

You see, relationship is about RELATING to each other. No big secrets (little secrets are fine though), no holding back, no lies. And its about SHARING – of your thoughts, fear, hope & dreams, wonders, problems, etc. If you can’t even do that, its high time to take a step back and evaluate where are you standing in the ‘relationship’ picture.

As with the stupid cat, it should trust me better since it was MEWING non-stop, giving out ‘help me’ signals all night long. So please, trust your ‘helper’ better and free yourself. And not be like the cat in the pic lol.

Windows Live Writer!

COOL!
That’s all i can say about this nifty tool for blogger. I just discovered it while poking around Windows Live page. Well, its a MS Windows offline blogging software. I don’t give much thought on MS free apps, but Windows Live Writer is an exception. It is SIMPLE and its WORKING beautifully!

You can do nifty stuff like resize images, rotate, edit, put special fx, etc. as you would a word processor like MS Word. You can put table and do text formatting, and many more that would usually need extra IT savviness while using the online blog interface. It also have plugins or extension to expand on the functionality! (like Firefox’s Extensions). It also support quite a number of blog provider (like Blogger, Wordpress, etc)

I urge you bloggers give this cool apps a go. It made me wanna blog a lot more! Here’s some preview of what it can do:

EDIT: oh did I mention that you can even edit your post right inside WLW? Well, I just did, without opening Blogspot web!

Last sunday me and KawanBoxx crew - Musaddik and Azizan went to Melati area to check out a bangsal Tomoi place. The kru there wanted to put his fighter on the ring. So we went there to get to know them. Personally I was curious because Melati is borderline from where I live and I've never heard of them.

BTW they call themselves Fyling Cobra Tomoi Club. First of all, these guys are hardcore. I mean the equipments and training facility (if we can call that) are all self-made! Buckets filled with cements for barbell, old tyre wrapped on pole for punching target, and other weird contraptions lying around that make me feel, wow this guys must be training real hard - hard as in under-equpped. The ace fighter, Amir, is quite good. He got all the Nak Muay quality - setong (strong), goodheart (stamina), and most important HUMBLE. We were not there long enough to see his complete training regime but I must honestly say Amir would benefits better in a real gym, with real tanner (trainer).

After we went back, something occurred to me. That I have better gym acccess than this guy and I lack the motivation that this guy has. I am determined to push myself harder on my Muay Thai training. And be able to kick as powerful & as high as Amir can :)

Nam & me - the initiation of Muay Thai

Finally I'm able to start my training here! I was not having enough sleep due to work and I was a bit under the weather. But I was resolute on starting on Monday 15 Dec. I train with Mr. Nam or Saksit. Ija & Athina train with Fa So Chun the ever smiling Nak Muay. Kirsty the owner was there as well, chirpy as a bird, as always. She helped with the translation on & off while sitting behind the counter with a stopwatch. She love to talk (she admits, we noticed hehe).

I almost KO'ed Nam, my trainer. Haha I wished i'm that good!!

Anyway, it was not a macho, testosterone-ridden bigballs gym as most would expect from a fightclub. It was a friendly, joke-abundant gym where you'd feel really at home or among friends the moment you enter the gym (after climbing many many stairs to the top 4th floor). The guys under training are friendly as well - introducing themselves and mingle around. This is not to say the gym lacks power or seriousness. The Thai trainers - Nam, Chun, and oldtimer Sawai - are all old hands in Muay Thai arena. A single class these guys gave you are full of tips & tricks. We were monitored closely too, with timers and train techniques.

I always suck at roundhouse kick. Nam showed me the proper way by letting me bashed his tummy :)

It was a great start for me and I urge anyone who wanted to start Muay Thai, whatever the reason is, please have a visit at Boxxwarriors Gym Ampang. Sorry if this sound like promoting, but I just like the atmosphere there. Except the smelly gloves and makeshift toilet (KIRSTY! get that toilet properly done please!)

I can't wait for next class even though Nam promised me a harder & punishing training scheme! Until then....CHOKKKK! :)

The World of Meagre Existence

Surprise! I discovered I've written some fiction long time ago. Probably I'll decide to publish it online - if I think I can get the time to edit and continue the story.

Anyway, it's called The World of Meagre Existence (tentative title). It is a journal of an unnamed traveller into exotic strange lands. It is leaning toward Science Fiction and humour.

Kelantan revisited

It has been ages since i last visited Kelantan. Almost forgot how it was. Well, nothing much changed since 10-12 years back. Nothing drastic anyway. Went there for the Muay Thai event. Also this was my first time traveling solo. It was fun. I took Firefly's twin propeller plane - which is a fascinating ride of its own. "Air Turbulence" paint a new picture in my mind (and tummy).

Anyways....

Here are a few things that I got reminded again, and new things I learned in Kelantan:
1 - Chinese here speaks perfect Kelantanese. It felt weird calling a Chinese "Abe"

2 - The food is ALWAYS sweet. My first lunch in Kelantan was a hot & spicy looking Ayam (chicken) Chili Tomato. So I poured a healthy dose of the gravy. I end up eating the fringe of my unsoiled rice. it was worst than a Ayam Madu (honeyed chicken).

3 - Drivers here thinks they drive a tank instead of car. Signal light? Who cares. No parking/stopping/waiting/U-turn? no such words exist.

4 - Mamak here is best thought of as spiced up kedai makan kelantan (kelantan restaurant). Just to prepare yourself from disappointment after ordering teh tarik & roti canai. Atleast at the riverside one.

5 - Marlboro is the hardest to find.

6 - Gocoh means fight. Luckily I was with a group of Muay Thai fighters :D

7 - Tanner means Trainer. In a cool way I like how it was pronounced by the Thais - especially by Mat Amin

8 - Earrings worn by male are frowned at. First I thought I was stared at for my charm o_O

9 - You can still find rare antiques still in use (see pic)

10 - Worst of all for a nocturnist like me, 11pm is the maximum time to witness any 'life' on the street.

Anyhow, these 10 things might sound like a pouty complaints but in truth I was enjoying these Kelantan quirkiness. It was memorable & appreciated nonetheless. It made me smile writing this down :)

After a number of body conditioning Muay Thai session at home, now I'm having better stamina & endurance. I feel it is about time for me to register with a gym. And guess what, Boxxwarriors Gym open one up in Ampang Point area (same row as Hometown Yong Tau Foo, overlooking Ampang Puteri Hospital). SOO convenient for me! yeah!

PS: for those interested, this is a pure Muay Thai gym, not some kickboxing or Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) body-combat stuff. So get yer Muay Thai boxer-shorts ready!

What can I say, this was my first experience with big Muay Thai event - Kelantan Nov 2008. And I was the floor crew to boot - ALL ACCESS tag dude!

The sound of heavy powerful bashings and sprinkle of sweats & blood were priceless to experience so close to the ring. My heart was racing as if I was the one fighting. Involuntary shouts, whoops and claps came freely from me. Now I can understand when Boxxtomoi aka Mus said "you'll get hooked once you are beside the ring so close to the fighters".

This was also my first time meeting & mingling with the NakMuay. Before and after fights. To be able to see behind-the-scene ready-room. The preparation of oiled massages, the ritualistic donning of Mongkon. Also the proud faces of winners, and the concealed anguish of losers. But here I see no hate between them, only respect. Nor do I see big-headed pride. Just respectful, spirited, sportmanship - no not sportmen, but WARRIORS. In a sense, I see all of them as winners.

Thanks to Mus & Kawanboxx, I can now tell my grandchildren my little bloody & sweaty story LOL. BTW, The fees I paid to be a KawanBoxx was really a charity. From Kawanboxx to ME! Not the other way around. Thanks once again.

Recently a friend ask me about 3D softwares and I can see the disbelief when I said it cost around RM12,000 more or less for pro-grade application like 3ds Max. Ofcourse there are other cheaper alternative like Cinema4D (RM3500) which is quite good really. But there are also FREE software! No I don't mean pirated/cracked apps. Here I list two of the most reviewed 3D apps which is surprisingly good!

1) Blender
This app is the most talked about in the free 3D community. The feature set is almost like a full-blown pro-apps. And it is even competitive with some commercial apps too! You can't go wrong with this one if you want to start 3D. And you can't beat the price - it's FREE.

3D Tutorials #1 - 3D Text

Today I've decided to do a tutorial instead. I'll start with simple basic tutorials for beginners. Requests are open for more advanced tute. I'll be using Autodesk 3ds Max 2009 as reference so some terms or workflow might not apply to your choice of 3D apps.

Create your own cool 3D text
Most 3D apps have text primitives or built-in text shape generator. This is the most straight-forward method. Or you can also import your text outline you've created in Illustrator or similar. BTW, this tut can be applied to other shapes as well, like a logo. In this tut I will use this import-method.

Preparing the vector shape from Illustrator or similar
After creating your text in Illustrator, you need to convert it into *vector shapes or outline. You can do this by Ctrl+Shift+O or Menu>Type>Create Outline. Now save a version that your 3D apps can import. 3ds max can except AI (Illustrator) files directly but it need to be saved in AI v8 format. Most other 3D apps can accept Autocad drawing format: DWG or DXF which you use Export from Illustrator.

* Vector Primer
Vector means mathematically created shapes or graphic as opposed to Raster which is pixel-based thingy like photos (digital or scanned). A vector shape retains the info for the path coordination making it a cool format for import/export between applications.

Importing the shape into 3D apps
This is pretty straightforward for 3ds max. I just drag n drop the AI file onto Max. You can also use Import. Now you'll see your text as spline shapes. You need to attach all the shapes to be a single shape. Rename it to something cool. It is good habit to rename everything in 3D. Seriously. Now is also a good time to rescale your text to suitable size - Illustrator's dimension is for paper-size, which is quite tiny compared to 3D app's dimension where usually people build cars or houses!
*In Max, rescaling the object won't really change the internal dimension, (which will give trouble later on) you need to rescale it up from the sub-object level.

Gimme the freakin' depth!
To give the flat shape some depth, simply apply Extrude or Bevel from the modifier panel. Voila! you got 3D text.

In my final image, I use a slightly more advance bevelling called Bevel Profile. I also add a Mentalray (renderer) chrome material plus simple lighting setup.

Ok now that you know your modelling tools, let's get a bit deeper (and longer explanation) on Polygonal modelling.

First, the Mesh
A mesh is a general term used to describe piece of geometry in 3D. It is made of many polygons and other sub-objects.

The mighty Polygon
This is the basic piece of element to form a shape. It is also call a 'face' on a mesh. Most basic polygon is 3-sided - a triangular or 'tri' in short 3D jargon. Usually a quad (4-sided) mesh is used most of the time. A polygon is always one-sided. Meaning it only have surface on one side and it is zero-thickness. So to form a sheet of thin mat for instance, you need to create the side polygon as well. Though most of the time you don't really need thickness.

Vertex or Vertices (plural)
In a polygon mesh, you got vertices that made up the basic structure. Think of the join-the-dot game. To create tri-polygon you need 3 dots connected with Edges to form the triangle.

Edge
An edge is a space between 2 vertices. This is also forms Edgeloop which basically mean a continuous ring of edges (will explain later).

That was the basic component of a mesh. So, to make a box you need 6 polygons, 8 vertices, and 12 edges. Got it? OK good. Uhmm what else i want to talk about? Ahh modelling tools...

With polygonal modelling, you get to Cut, Split, Divide, Extrude, Bevel, etc. Remember when I said poly-modelling is like sculpting? I mean it. For example, to build a head, You create a basic geometry - a box or a sphere. Ohh btw, poly-modelling is also called box-modelling. Then you move/rotate/scale the sub-component. But moving alone is not enough. You need to cut or add polygons, say to make a nose. I'd use Extrude on polygons to raise a new set of faces to form the basic nose. To make the nostrils, I'd divide the single polygon, then inset the two faces to form new inner faces. I'd then extrude this new faces up to make a hole.

Subdivision added. I'm not a nose expert, but i think that nose is passable and kinda qute too :)

This process goes on and on - cutting, moving, extruding, until you ge the basic shape up. This might sound tedious but it is really fun actually! You'd spend hours if not days pushing verts (jargon for vertices). Then apply subdivision or meshsmoothing, you'd see your coarse model turn into something smooth, curvy and yummy :). This is also why poly-modelling is great for organic model which need that handcraft touch.

Last post I mentioned about terms & jargons used in 3D production. Here it is plus some other stuff too.

While modelling you'll come across words like Mesh, Polygon, Vertex, Edgeloop, Spline, NURBS, Patch, etc. I will try my best to tell you what it all means by breaking it down into category. But first of all, I'll tell about modelling methods available.

Polygonal & Sub-Division Modelling
This is my fav method. It is more like sculpting really. You take a block of basic shape and start shaving & adding polygons to form a more or less a complete shape. This is still blocky. Then come the Sub-Division level. Most 3D apps have a function to sub-divides your coarse polygons into smaller, more refine polygons. Some called it Meshsmooth/Turbosmooth. Some called it simply Subdivision.
Pros: Like sculpting, you can create almost anything with it. Iterative workflow meaning you could start with a stick and work up until its a sword or something. Very good for animation.
Cons: You need to have a clean mesh from the start to achieve a good final shape. I'll explain more later.

Patch Modelling
Patch modelling is like warping/wrapping/molding a thin, stretchable sheet into shapes. Take a square sheet, and pull the center edge out and you'll get a rounded edge. pull the center upward and you get a mound. Yes now you can model a pillow.
Pros: Very good for something curvy and smooth like...a pillow.
Cons: Very hard to get good sharp edges.

NURBS Modelling
It stands for Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines. Using NURBS make me feel like a scientist or something :). Anyway, it is much like Patch modelling but more mathematically intensive. NURBS (i like how it sounds...) work by taking math coordination functions like XYZ value and use tangent and stuff. Very genius-like. And very heavy on your computer.
Pros: same as Patch. More refine control and advanced toolset
Cons: same as Patch. Heavy

Spline-based Modelling
It is also called spline-cage modelling. Imagine you build a skeletal base, say a Hindenburg Zeppelin (that caught up in fire), then you apply sheets of coverings to the cage. You'll get a Zeppelin! (minus fire. that I will tell how to do later)
Pros: Tweakable, fairly accurate, almost able to build anything with a defined shapes.
Cons: The cage need to be in correct order and have corresponding 'support' cages. Organics modelling is somewhat tedious.

(Previously 3D Made Easy - OK still not a clever title but this will suffice for now)

3D is wonderfully, deliciously multi-faceted. You can do lots n lots of things with it. From simple things to excrutiatingly complex stuff. For instance, you can create cool logos, or an animated bouncing ball, your fanciful product design, or a walking fire-breathing dragon.

With that in mind, 3D can be dauntingly hard to grasp for first-timers since you can easily get sidetracked with it's many many application features. So, my first tips is to get to know what you want to do with 3D and try to narrow down YOUR fancy.

Here's a list of job specification a 3D artists usually falls into. This is also a workflow of a complete 3D production.

Modelling
moulding polygons n vertices to form an object or subject.

Texturing
giving that object/subject some skin or colour or material.

Lighting
just like any camera-based thingy, you need lights.

Animation
making things moves

Special FX
the 'WOW' factor of the 3D branch.

Technical/Renderings
the boring but all-important stage where all the above get it on the final image.

And here is a list of production category:
3D Film Animation
yep, most ppl wanted to get into 3D after watching Pixar's stuff.

Special FX/Visual FX
you saw them in movies and wonder whether that car crash scene was real or CGI.

Architectural Visualization
creating virtual rooms and buildings look like it have been built before any brick been laid.

Product Visualization
next time you see a new shoes ads by Nike, think again whether its real or not.

Simulation (Industrial, Medical, Infotainment, etc)
watched "Aircrash Investigation" lately?

Creative Design a.k.a Creative Content Creation
any serious designer is a fool if he/she think they don't need to learn 3D.

Meanwhile....
I'm trying to do a 3D primer for beginners. Just for fun and simply because i want to muahaha. And I'll be going to discuss bits & pieces, tips & tricks, tutorials, muscle-show or whatnots in multiple postings starting ....now.

Intro
I know a lot of would-be 3D artist or designer wanting to do 3D gets put-off by the complexity in 3D apps. Well, it IS complex. IMO (in my opinion), 3D is the highest form of digital artistry one can try to achieve - atleast technically. But then again, 3D can form your imaginations & dreams in a very realistic (or surrealistic) sense . So, that signifies complexity needed both in the applications AND usage.

Anyhow, all you need to get started is:

1 - a computer good enough to run things smoothly, obviously.
A good gaming PC would suffice. Bare minimum you need Pentium 4 3.0Ghz, 1GB RAM, and an Nvidia or Ati gaming video card. That's it. Ofcourse it could help TONS if you have latest rig like Intel Core2Quad, 4GB fast RAM, Geforce 9xxxx series GT 512DDR3, Raptor 10K hard disk...ok I'll stop. You get the picture.

2 - a 3D package of your choice.
Despite the myth that noobies believed, ALL the major apps are equal in ability - 3ds max, Maya, XSI, Lightwave - "the big 4", you can't go wrong with any of them. Secondary apps like Cinema4D, Carrara, modo, blender (free) are catching up fast and pretty good too.

3 - Dedication, Time and Coffee (or equivalent).
No lie here, you need a lot of Dedication, Time, and Coffee for learning 3D. Atleast a steady supply of either one for 3 months would suffice to get you on the right track.

Once you've sorted above 3 points, you're good to go, which prompts me to end this part and start thinking of a cleverer Title for next post.

Bought a floor unit!

Yep I did it again. I bought a Zoom G9.2tt floor unit guitar fx yesterday. My mission and objective that day was to test out studio nearfield monitor, possibly buying one, but got meself in trouble testing out the G9.2tt at Chambers Music. It is shiny, sturdy, sexy, and ofcourse sound great! So I bought it. I'll get that monitor some other time :)

First of all, I've been checking out the Zoom guitar fx series for quite a while, targeting the lower range G7.1ut but that was out of stock. So I saw a bigger, sexier G9 on the shelf....just to test out the features and sound you know....

The G9 got TWO vacuum tubes (12AX7) - 2 actual physical tube! One is pre (input) preamp, the other is post fx (output). Since it got real tube, the warmth and organic tone - which is somewhat lacking in software emulations - are apparent once i turned up the tubes' knob to get warm saturation and solid state sweetness.

The amp & cabinet simulation was great considering the price range (RM1550). I haven't tested it extensively but it sound as good (or better when combined with the real tube preamp) than Guitar Rig 2 or Amplitube 2 software emulation plugins.

It have a lot of fx modules and 5 simultaneous configuration. Obviously, you can't beat soft-emus over the shear number of unlimited modules & configuration. But the G9.2tt is more than adequate for a lot of guitarist - both in studio/rehearsal and live on stage.

What i like about it is that the layout is based on hardware amp-head (aka preamp combo/stack). The topmost area housed a row of knobs. You get the usual Gain, Level, Bass, Mid, Treble, Presence. This can be tweak live, just like real thing while busy wowing the crowd :)

On the top left, you get the usual LED + screens. But there is another row of knobs beneath for editing the EFX module. This is also tweakable live - like having stomp-boxes and fine-tuning the [parameters...or simply playing with the knobs for special fx is always fun - like tweaking Boss Digital Delay's parameters creating dreamy out of this world fx :)

Oh I forgot to mention that it have 2 pedals. One is typically a Volume pedal, the other is Expression/Mod controller. The catch is, there is another sliding (horizontally) pedal on top of Pedal2. This is like having a Vector XY controller in synths!

AND ohhh, the respond time between changing patch is 5ms!!!! no more silence in-between patch! OK i will stop writing now and get back on playing it :)

Oh man, these days software development is faster than human learning curve - or atleast for people in the mid-thirties. I still haven't completely toured SONAR 7's new feature...

It seem Sonar 8 is a much more efficient performance-wise (30% general performance gain) rather than laden with new features. Beside performance tweaks, which is quite a few, the one I like is the Dedicated Instrument track. It used to create 2 tracks for a virtual instruments which i feel a bit clunky to handle on large tracks. Now it's a single track. yeay! The Live Bounce sounds good too but i rarely bounce tracks but its good to know now its a single step action. On this line, with Anytime Recording you can now Arm track to record while track is playing, something Sonar users will feel like a removal of small splinter in the butt :). Most of the enhancements are previously minor irritation but now ironed out like the automatic Bus Inputs Quickgroup - no more adjusting ALL guitar tracks using FX Send 3 one by one. Cool.

Enough of the mediocre updates, let's move on to juicier new features.

Sonar 8 now include Beatscape - a loop manipulation and realtime triggering/performance. Maybe its something like Sonar's Cyclone which is already an excellent loop manip plugin. But seem it has more of a synth approach with filters and all. Cool.

Sonar now have a full Dimension Pro included. This is good since Dimension is an awesome sample/synthesis plugin. Also included is NI Guitar Rig 3 LE - wow this is avery welcome addition! Even though its only Limited Edition, GR3 will wet any axeman's tight pants anytime! Awesome amp sim modelling. We also see a lot more xx-64 plugins which started with the excellent LP-64 mastering plugins.

All in all, this iteration is not something to run-around-the-house-shouting about. New instruments can't really be called an 'upgrade'. It feel more like a beef-up rather than a version iteration. But I guess Cakewalk is concentrating more 'under-the-hood', tweaking performance and cleaning up codes for a better, stabler product - which is a VERY good point already. I just hope the performance tweak be as good as what on paper.

Got an awesome news - Fallout 3 is coming out this 28th Oct! (Xbox 360, PS3, PC). This post apocalypse dystopian game is beautiful! Based on the original gameplay PLUS a HUGE open 'sandbox' world almost like Oblivion, this going to eat some productive hour when it is out. Developed by Bethesda Softworks (maker of Oblivion, obviously), we can expect high quality imagery, sound and interactivity. Well, the gameplay demo alone blown my mind! Not to mention the story line depth etc.

OK I will try to keep a blog on my journey back into Muay Thai. Above all I need to record my personal progress, not some oh-look-i-do-muaythai kinda thing. So yeah shut up you prick :)

Phase 1 - Stamina & hardening process
First of all, I've been really out of shape! I started slow by stretching longer and then start to jog slow. I didn't go far - about 3-4KM only - man i was REALLY pumping and out of breath! A-pack-of-cigarette-a-day really show it's toll on me. My legs was fine, but my lungs & heart really need a work out. It was burning!

After that, did an hour or so of simple MT strike & steps. This is the hardening part. I don't really go for powerful strikes, just some technique and hardening the bones - particularly the elbow strike on mango tree (I need to get a punching back soon and banana tree is nowhere to be found so i can harden the leg/knee strike). Oh well some bruises are good for the hardening process. Anyway this is what was taught to me when I was younger :)

Tomorrow I will try to do atleast 3KM without panting so much and ofcourse the hardening again...

Awesome fight both of them and to Abbas, that classical Muay Thai elbow is inspiring! and that KO is SCARY bro! Thanks both Mus for the share & Abbas for a good show. I'll be looking forward to see you guys at the UM KawanBoxx meet-up.

Hello Cyberspace! I'm back from Raya vacation. It was, as always a great time for me, and also a back-breaking time too - I had to pack & unpack my studio area (yes the whole studio room!). Since I set it up in the front part of the house, this need to be clear for a buffet-type serving area.

phewww! my hands are shaking for not touching my computers for too long. lol

Oh well, now i'm back...with a few more kilos too, I'm gonna make extra round of jogging & muay thai-ing tonite!

After years of waiting it is finally (well, almost) here! The exact date are TBA (to be announce). I am restless now. Can't seem to contained meself of the excitement of the best ever game that i've played - Diablo I, II and soon III. I've decided that for once, I'd buy an original Diablo III. It will worth every cent.

Good sport shoes shop

If you're out to find sporting shoes (gym, running, all-terrain, training, etc), and you're in KL area, I'd suggest going to a shop in Sg.Wang/Bukit Bintang, ground/mezzanine floor, on the way out to the street. It is the New Balance shop beside Al-Ikhsan sports shop.

I've never been in a shoe shop that is VERY helpful and professional. The guy took digital measurements of my feet, ask me to walk barefooted - to see what type of walk gait and give me detail explanation on various type of sporting shoes that fits me.

Awesome guy n shop. He don't even push me to buy this n that. Just frank professional business man. Cool ***** 5 star!

PS: i bought an all-terrain NB shoes with 3-4 cool-sounding features lol. it fits n feel good too!

Oh yes! the coolest ever sci-fi tv series. Beside Automan's cool glowy suit, his coolest gadget/buddy was the ever floating Cursor that can transform into an equally glowy car.

my DVD from Boxxtomoi (Mus) arrived this evening! 3 volumes on 5 DVDs!!! like opening a birthday present, i ripped the Poslaju pack and slap the first DVD in the tray 'TM - Kejohanan Tomoi Antarabangsa Kedah II'. Like an Otaku getting his rare DVD collection, i sat transfixed until the end of Disc 1 and continue Disc 2 straight on until almost berbuka time. It seem the 2 DVDs run longer than it supposed to, since i kept rewinding & repeating awesome shots! there were a lot of those lovely shots. If this is the 80s and on VHS, I'd worn out the tape pretty soon LOL.

Anyway, I only wished i was there on the ring-side. Thanks Mus of Boxxtomoi for making this great video and contribution to Muay Thai. And letting fan like me have the opportunity to experience it.

Hope
When you're having high expectation of it, you are an optimist.
When you don't put much thought in it, you are a pessimist.
There is rarely a middle-ground - how convenient that would be!
In any way, if that hope was not achieved, you are left disappointed.

I'm done hoping. Time to move on. To try finding that middle-ground.
So that life could be a little bit easier and to come to term with what's left.

Gattaca's Coming

I love that movie, Gattaca, with it's dystopian retro-future settings of a world populated by perfect genetically-engineered human. It is scary to think of a world where every child were clinically gene-perfected, and accidental 'love-child' - naturally conceived - are considered an anomaly or even crippled.

The idea is a good one - I wouldn't want my future children to have critical illness for sure. But if everything's perfect, without stray quirkiness in natural genetics, Life would be boring.

Had small talk with Ija about mandi hadas on Ramadhan fasting month.

Ija: somebody told me that we women don't have to 'mandi hadas' (Islamic cleansing) after period to puasa (fasting) the next day.

Me: Huh?!

Ija: yeah, he said that was only for sembahyang (prayer). Puasa is just an act, not praying.

Me: HUH?!?!??!!? Is he Malay? (and muslim)

Ija: yes.

Me: look, i'm not religious but i did my Islamic study at school and you NEED to cleanse yourself for any religious act like fasting! you're even cleansed when you're dead. So tell me, who is this friend of yours?

Ija: just somebody that i just say hi at the gym.

Me: well, either he is one VERY bright turd, or a so-called forward-thinking elitist Malay turd. All in all, he's a T.U.R.D nonetheless. So don't get yourself close to fecal matter yea. LOL

Sodom and Gomorrah revisited

Saw Ellen DeGeneres news clip from Yahoo about her wedding and a few clicks later found some papparazi'ed photos and torrents of hate/love comments. This amused me to no end about America's new highlights in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered, or LGBT in short (i just learned that term).

Before i continue, i must say that i'm not a homophobic person. I'm also not very religious too. i'm looking at this issue with a 3rd person practical view, so to speak. So....

OK, first there was the gay Christians issue and gay preacher, marriage, and stuff. These outraged even the American lol. But the mighty America overcame these troubled times nonetheless. I found this organization btw. These are dedicated 'religious' people studying Bible and what not and these smart ppl said "We believe that human delineations such as race, gender or sexual orientation are not held relevant by our Creator". Very smart quote. modern. forward-thinking.

What confuses me is that, there in the Bible it was mentioned that God condemned LGBT stuff (as noted in my title-link: Sodom & Gomorrah). So, these ECWR.org studies Bible AND supports which God condemned.

Warped. Seriously warped. Lightyears ahead of my puny mind.

Oh and i almost forgot about similar event about Malaysian gay pastor and the outraged local Christians. *note* Why most gaymen are bald? Anyway, he was married for 7 years and i quote "that she had endured much anguish during their seven-year, childless union.". He also credits his former wife for giving him strength to be true to himself. Hell yeah if I'm in his wife's shoes, i'd also try my best to fuck him up some more.

Oh well, like i said, i'm no homophobic, but come on people of Earth, if you're religious try not to be God and create your own version of understandings just so you could feel comfortable with your deficiencies. It all boils down to self-serving scheme. Just accept the facts that you are just 'different' and be happy with it. Don't drag the whole faith into your predicament.

PS: i have no problem with gays being gay. Just those religious/pastor-ish gay.
